Umnenge Lodge is a newly built African guesthouse, offering luxury accommodation in Gansbaai. This African style lodge is situated on the rugged cliffs of De Kelders near Gansbaai in South Africa. Umnenge offers family and child friendly accommodation. "Umnenge" is a Xhosa expression meaning 'whale in the bay' and refers to the Southern Right Whale which can be seen clearly from Umnenge Lodge frolicking in the waters of Walker Bay from July to December each year.

Located in De Kelders near Gansbaai, which is in one of the most beautiful provinces of South Africa, the Western Cape.

De Kelders and Gansbaai are the Southern Right Whale and Great White Shark capitals of the world. Vast numbers of whales are seen daily in Walker Bay during whale season, which is from July to December.

There are two beautifully designed bedrooms, both en-suite with complimentary tea and coffee and furnished for an African king or queen. Wake up in the morning to a rushing sea and go to sleep to the calls of the whales. The bedrooms are airy and spacious with queen size beds and a fully stocked mini bars to tease you with their delights. Our large marble bathrooms have walk-in showers and big luxurious designer baths. Both rooms have their own sea view balconies, where you can relax and watch the whales.

We have the rocks, beach and caves on our doorstep. Go for a walk, or a run, along the hiking trail, enjoy the fynbos and flowers in the nearby Nature Reserve. Whales, white shark diving, fishing, horseriding are just a few of the experiences you can enjoy in the area.

Richard and Mary will see to your every need. You will become part of the Umnenge family and wont want to leave!

African Cuisine We believe that warm hospitality and memorable food are as important as watching the whales. Enjoy true African cuisine in our Lodge. Enjoy an African braai in a traditional African fire-pit while watching the whales. A joint of meat will be turning on the spit or a fish roasting over the coals, while you sip Cape wines and take in the sunset.

You will be infused with the essence of Africa.
We have a variety of TV channels for lazy afternoons after a long day at the beach.
Should you forget something at home, we will do our best to supply it for you.

Whale watching:
See 40-ton Southern Right Whales only meters from the rocks or boat. The cliffs of Walker Bay, couple of meters away from the Lodge, offer the best land based whale viewing in the world. Watch as mothers feed there calves and come within 20 meters of the rocks.

Cape Fur Seal watching:
Travel by boat to Geyser Rock to experience vast colonies of seal and sea birds.

Great White Shark Diving:
Be brave and dive with the king of the sea, just 20km off shore from the Lodge is Dyer Island where Great White Sharks swim undisturbed.

Kayak Trips:
Set out on a sea kayak with a qualified guide and lifesaver. Enjoy a close encounter with the marine life.

Horse Riding:
10km away from the Lodge is Stanford, they offer horse riding on trained horses.

Explore the Fynbos:
On every coast and mountain in the Western Cape you can admire the beauty and extravagance of the proteas and indigenous plants in abundance. You will always get a surprise, not one year is the same, every year some other plant makes itīs appearance.

De Kelders Cave Hike:
De Kelders - meaning caves - the only fresh water caves on the African Coast with fantastic hikes through the caves, where archeological digs have uncovered a civilisation that lived in this area about 80 000 years ago.

Beaches:
Miles and miles of unspoilt beaches, for swimming, building sand castles and exploring. Urchin shells and little mermaidīs purses. Beauty as far as the eye can see.

4 x 4 Mountain tour
An adventure up the mountain above Gansbaai and surrounding areas, enjoy scenic rides through the fynbos and amazing views over Gansbaai, De Kelders, Franskraal and along the coastline to Hermanus on one side and Pearly Beach on the other.

Wine and Beer tasting:
Wine tasting is offered by many local wine farms in the area, even Birkenhead Breweries our local microbrewery with the best tasting beer in South Africa.

Danger Point Lighthouse:
The beauty of our town, the HMS Birkenhead Shipwreck (1852) lies just off the coast from the lighthouse, you can see the waves crashing over it.

Fishing:
Fishing is one of the biggest sports in the area. Many visitors enjoy coastline angling or deep-sea fishing; feel free to use our in house Umnenge Charters.

Golf:
The 9-hole golf course in the middle of the fynbos, will give you hours of pleasure.

Bowling and Squash:
Gansbaai has a bowling green and squash courts for the more energetic guests.

The Elim Mission:
The Elim Mission, an original Moravian Mission where they still grind flour in the original water mill, is situated about 20 minutes from Gansbaai.

Hot Air Ballooning:
Wineland Ballooning offers a unique adventure in the beautiful area of the Boland. HOT-AIR BALLOON flights are taking place in the scenic Berg River Valley outside of Paarl, towards Malmesbury.

Helicopter Rides:
Get some of the best views of Gansbaai and the surrounding areas.
