THE CAPITAL‘S CHARM: KINGSTON
Although English is the official language, most people speak patois (a mixture of English and languages of African origin with words of all origins). In fact, Kingston is the largest English-speaking city south of Miami.
Kingston is also known as the "Cultural Capital of the Caribbean" and is the world’s seventh largest natural port. Its strategic location between North and South America make its Conference Center a favourite destination for business meetings.
The hillsides of the Blue Mountain Range have a dynamic, cosmopolitan atmosphere where the old and the new, the subdued and untameable, and the eternal and latest fashions coexist. One can join fashionable people at an open-air performance of the National Dance Theatre Company, applaud famous folk singers, explore the treasures of the National Art Gallery, discover the Fortress of Pirate Henry Morgan, or admire fascinating memorabilia at the Bob Marley Museum, Jamaica’s ultimate tribute to the late father of reggae.
THE PLEASURE OF MONTEGO BAY
One of the island’s best natural beaches, Doctor’s Cave, is a starting point for a trip to the north: rolling landscapes with golf courses, swimming pools of all shapes and sizes, narrow streets, and a peaceful, crystal clear sea that brings blue and green together upon touching the white sand.
Montego Bay (or Mo Bay as it is known by the locals) is a paradise for spoilt holidaymakers. Here, they are certain to acquire an enviable tan and the ever present coquetry of Mobay´s Harbour Street style dreadlocks.
Take a journey on the Appleton Express, a train that was previously used by government officials but has now been equipped for a day-long journey 60 kilometres inland. Some stops are virtually a must: a visit to the Appleton Rum Distillery, the Ipswich Caves and two stops for passengers to buy made-to-measure clothes (one, on the outbound journey to choose the fabrics and design, and the other, on the way back, to pick up the finished product.
Interesting visits in the city centre are to The Cage, an eighteenth-century prison for slaves and sailors on the run, the beautiful Parish of St. James and the Great House.
Inland, a Hilton High Day Tour is a must. This provides a view of country life, a balloon journey and a revelation of a different Jamaica in the mysterious Cockpit Country.
SONG AND LEGEND IN NEGRIL
Going westwards along the north coast, Negril, which is surrounded by beaches and was a favourite, unconventional hippy refuge in the nineteen seventies, has become a tourist centre with hundreds of places at which to stay at. The buildings, which only reach the height of the palm trees, range from hostels and villas to luxurious resorts with night-time entertainment.
Until very recently, its ten kilometres of beach were the island’s best kept secret; an oasis for peace-loving souls in search tranquillity and a long way from the pressures of modern life. The transparent water invites visitors to take a dip and spend some time with the infinite varieties of tropical fish, or admire the passivity of a romantic sunset.
EIGHT RIVERS AND THEIR LANDSCAPES
The most impressive scenic views in this north-eastern region feature the Dunn’s River Waterfalls, which fall from a height of 183 metres and where one can climb on the rocky surfaces and swim in the fresh water lagoon.
The Coyaba River Garden and Museum is on private property and is adorned with abundant pools with fish and waterfalls.
Another fascinating place is Harmny Hall, a carefully-restored nineteenth-century mansion that has one of the best art and handicrafts galleries. This is an ideal place to acquire souvenirs and memorabilia to take home.
PORT ANTONIO, A STARS’ PARADISE
For many years this was the great secret of Bette Davis, Ginger Rogers and Errol Flynn, who christened it "more beautiful than any woman I have ever seen". It is said that a dreamer once built a castle here for his lover using sea water in the cement. The castle and the young woman disappeared to leave only a legendary ruin, appropriately called the "Folly". Orchids, bananas, ferns and palm trees grow alongside the road that runs by this peaceful town.
Water lovers can choose between an ice-cold shower at the Somerset Falls, or snorkelling with an oxygen tank and swimming in the Blue Lagoon.
Another option is a raft trip or to join the Blue Lagoon Celebrity and Beach Party, which is held twice a week.
TOWARDS THE MOUNTAINS: MANDEVILLE
This place, which is named after the Count of Mandeville, has a British feel and is an example of traditional English architecture. It is corner of peace and quiet, with a cool, mild climate, that offers a change of rhythm worth experiencing. It has a great range of country landscapes and places to camp and is an ideal place for a relaxing end to one’s trip. |
